The winter rose cultivated in southern Taiwan has gradually risen to prominence due to its outstanding quality and staggered production period from rose production in central Taiwan. Oncidium has yellow flowers that resemble a group of dancing girls during full bloom; therefore, it is also known as dancing-lady orchid. Swaying in the gentle breeze, the Oncidium portrays a wonderful image. Oncidium is produced in Zhutian Township of this county during winter, often in the millions. The constantly improving preservation, shipping and packing technologies have significantly enhanced the quality of Oncidium exported and it is extremely popular in Japan, thereby transforming rose cultivation into a golden business.

Wax apple

Wax apple is the most famous product among the specialty goods in Pingtung and it owns the name of "black pearl". Under the careful cultivation of Pingtung County farmers, the tropical fruit Wax apple is available for sale throughout the four seasons. As a result, Pingtung primary products play a leading role in the agricultural history. With soil and water, the fertilizer is also essential to the cultivation of bigger, darker and sweeter wax apple which wins the consumers' favor. At present, the origin of black pearl are on the coastal areas of Nanchou, Linpien and Fangliao.

Jujubes in this county are produced during December and February the following year. The main production region is in Gaoshu, which is located inside the water resource protection zone; therefore, the jujubes produced here are endowed with bright, shiny skin and sweet, refreshing succulence. There are roughly 200 hectares of coffee plantations in Pingtung County, including Neibu, Wanluan, Yanbu, Sandimen and Taiwu etc. The coffee is usually planted in an environment shaded by the foliage of the betel nut trees to create the ideal growing conditions. Bird’s Nest Fern

The county is one of the most important production regions for Bird’s Nest Fern. Ever since the indigenous community developed it into a type of edible wild herb, the consumers have welcomed its crisp, flavorsome taste. Bird’s Nest Fern prefers to grow in cool, damp environments; thus, it propagates readily in the wild in low elevation forests. The yellow, green tender leaves are the main edible regions. It is crisp, smooth and lush, suitable for stir-frying, boiling, braising or serving as a cold dish. In particular, stir-fried Bird’s Nest Fern with small dried fish is the signature dish of the vegetable.
